We start of at the Epilogue in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows wherein Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione are sending off their daughter and sons to Hogwarts at Platform Nine and Three Quarters. Albus Severus Potter, Harry and Ginny’s second child is scared that he will be sorted out to Slytherin. James Potter, the eldest, keeps on teasing him. Harry assures him that he is named after two headmasters of Hogwarts and being sorted to Slytherin is not a bad thing.
Albus and Rose, Hermione and Ron’s daughter, boarded the Hogwarts Express and entered a cabin occupied by one boy – Scorpius Malfoy. Rose didn’t like being in a cabin with Scorpius given that he is a Malfoy and there are rumors going around about him being the son of Voldemort but Albus felt comfortable with Scorpius so he stayed with him in the cabin and that started their friendship.
When they arrived at Hogwarts, Rose was the first one sorted and she got sorted to Gryffindor – no surprises about that. Albus, however, got sorted to Slytherin and everyone, even the Sorting Hat, got confused and silent about it.
Over the course of the year, Albus was bullied at school for not being like his father. He wasn’t able to get into the broom the first time he tried, he is not a Gryffindor and he is not excelling in any of his classes. He became timid and had just one friend – Scorpius.
The play fast forwarded to their second year in Hogwarts then to their third year and to their fourth year. Harry is Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Hermione is the Minister for Magic while Ron manages the Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. There is no appearance from the other Weasleys. Harry and Albus’ relationship turned for the worst and the last night before Albus’ fourth year, Harry and Albus fought. On that same night, Albus also overheard Harry talking to Amos Diggory who is begging for Harry to use the illegal time turner he got from a wizard he caught to bring back Cedric Diggory. Harry didn’t agree to Amos’ pleading and Amos’ went back to the hospital with his niece, Delphi Diggory.
Albus went to the Hogwarts Express and was determined to do something about bringing back Cedric to life and he asked Scorpius to go with him. Albus and Scorpius managed to get to the hospital where Amos is staying and they ended up in the “Bring back Cedric to Life” Quest with Delphi in tow.
That is pretty much the plot point of the play. Traveling back in time trying to save Cedric, learning that when you try to change the past, the future may or WILL end up differently and then trying to repair what you have done by asking for help from other people. There is a part where it is more of a Scorpius show than an Albus show but I kind of enjoyed that part because finally, there is a likable and cute Malfoy in the Harry Potter universe.
I didn’t understand much why Albus and Harry had that conflict. Their conflict is a bit similar to Snape and Harry’s relationship. Maybe it has something to do with Albus being named after Snape. And surprise, surprise, I also can’t fathom who the Cursed Child is. Seriously.
The book is just a transcript of the play with a short description of how the stage looks like and what happens around it and then the conversations between the characters so there are no explanations about why things are happening since you will just be able to read what is being said out loud and none of the thoughts swirling in the characters’ minds. So there’s not a lot of backstory to work on and I felt that some parts needed a backstory like why is there a rumor of Voldemort having a child (unless there was some of that in the previous books that I don’t recall), etc.
Do you know when anime TV series caught up with the manga and they need to put in filler episodes? That is how I felt this book/play is. It doesn’t really change anything in the Harry Potter universe unlike when X-Men Days of Future Past changed the future. I still enjoyed reading it though and I still recommend every Potter fan to read it. However, I can’t believe I am saying this, but maybe it is really time to give Harry Potter’s story a rest and move on to other wizard’s story such as the upcoming movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Harry Potter will forever be in my heart but unless there is a new and logical enemy out there not from Voldemort’s blood line, let’s leave Harry and the gang in peace and just re-read the original books.
SPOILER (highlight to read): Why is Voldemort the only powerful wizard? Why is his child, at 20 years old, still more powerful than Harry and the rest who are now 40-year old adults?
Rating: 3/5 – It’s okay.
